I'm a woman who is considering emigration from the USA to Israel. I'm not Jewish, but have enough of a Jewish background to be allowed under the Israeli Law of Return. I am a zionist, but sadly, as a child my main understanding about my family's background was being taught by my grandfather about the Holocaust, and that these were "my people." I wasn't raised with any cultural or religious traditions other than regular American ones. BTW, my real name is not Yaakova--I made the name up. (But I must say, it has a nice ring to it!)

The Question of Dual Citizenship

Note to regulars on my blog: This topic started in the comments section of www.olehgirl.com, when readers questioned her citizenship plans. I have no opinion about her plans (whatever they may be), but I am curious about how various people view the idea of retaining US citizenship after making aliyah, and why some people seem to find it distasteful to do so.

Linked are my two comments from Olehgirl's blog.

Guests and newcomers: feel free to express your opinions about this in my comments section.

well my first question would be: do you have to pay taxes to both countries?!

on a more serious note, and i'm not trying to start a poo-kicking fest, but i think that SOME people might want to retain US citizenship just in case...you know...the poo hits the fan, they have somewhere safe to run, and could be able to cut ties immediately and completely. they'd be granted immediate asylum by the US govt and not have to make a backward glance at israel. that's definitely not true for everyone, but i bet it is for some.

Hey Bagelchick :)
Good question about the double-taxation, it was my first question, too. The answer: no need to worry, you pay taxes to only one at a time.
I have more to say on the topic, but I'm too tired tonight.

Double taxation? Naw...not as bad as it sounds. There is by treaty an offset of one tax set against the other (very common also where one person WORKS say in England part of the year but is a US or Italian citizen). Dad is a tax specialist and I don't recall all the details but he worked it out for us and we're paying less in taxes than if we stayed in California....go talk to a tax specialist. I think you'll find this isn't really much of an issue. (We are dual citizens).
